Sport: Premier league transfer update

The transfer window shuts on August 9 and Newcastle United still have work to do ahead of the Premier League kick-off.
Magpies’ manager Rafa Benitez is still searching for a striker but the chase for West Brom’s Salomon Rondon has stalled with the two clubs unable to come to an agreement.
Meanwhile clubs across the Premier League and Championship are spending money to strengthern their teams ahead of deadline day.
With the riches of Premier League football bigger than ever thanks to a mega TV deal, teams are spending to ensure they benefit.
While the likes of Huddersfield, Brighton and Wolves continue to break their transfer records, United fans have been left frustrated with the perceived lack of spending at Newcastle United.
With close to £40 million in player sales, United fans expected Benitez to be given more money to spend given Mike Ashley’s promise to gave the manger ‘every penny’ the club generates.
However United have spent just £16 million on in-coming players and still have work left to do in the transfer market. Here is how United stack up so far in summer spending compared to other teams in the Premier League and Championship.

1. Liverpool - £162 million

Having finished fourth last season Jurgen Klopp has gone all out to make sure Liverpool can better that this season. In comes Alisson, in a world record deal for a goalkeeper of £56m, while Naby Keita and Fabino have also come in for mega money. Xherdan Shaqiri also arrived for just £13million.

2. West Ham United - £85.5 million

Finished 13th last season - three places below United - and were linked to Rafa Benitez earlier in the summer. Having gone for Manuel Pellegrini, the Hammers’ owners have backed their new manager. Winger Felipe Anderson arrived for a record fee of an initial £34m, while Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko have also come in for fees more than Newcastle United’s record transfer fee.
